The comedy has a spread-out feel, and a handful of the gags are even sitcom-weak. There are no purely evil characters and no purely good characters. The following review will reflect this particular Discworld book only… Samuel Vimes, the no-nonsense Commander of the Ankh-Morpork City Watch, has his work cut out for him. If you’ve read a few discworld books and you’re not Taking off my Granny Weatherwax hat – this has to be one of the best Discworld novels ever written even though during my first read throughs as a younger person the Watch series didn’t resonate with me the way it does now. She was darning his socks.

The City Watch series thkd a particularly special place in my heart. What is a bit odd is how Vimes shuts down the city in order to get home one night to read to his son. And I absolutely love the part where Sam is running through the cave, aware that he’s missing his 6pm reading time with young Sam, shouting out the words to the book he’s memorized.

Particular highlights for me in this one were the changes in Sam upon the birth of his son and the consequent exploration of Sam’s untapped potential for violence in the name of right.

It’s interesting to see Sam, who seems like a man who’d be the epitome of toxic masculinity, control his anger, never get thue unless absolutely necessary, love and respect his wife, and do whatever it takes to spend time with his son – including transcend space.

Neither the characters nor the themes here are substantially advanced from previous installments, and as a result I was deeply disappointed terryy I first read this. He belongs to the City Watch, has dedicated his life to Law prafchett Order and he believes politics stinks. With the anniversary of Koom Valley looming, the Watch learn of murder in tunnels that are being built underneath Ankh-Morpork.
